Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs, released the following statement in recognition of National Indigenous History Month:

“Today marks the start of National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour and celebrate the traditions, heritage, and culture of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Ontario and Canada. This year’s festivities follow the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential school in British Columbia. As we reflect on the strength and resiliency of the Indigenous peoples of Canada, let us honour these children and their families by deepening our collective understanding of the inter-generational trauma inflicted by residential schools, and the impacts of inequality and systemic racism on Indigenous peoples. During National Indigenous History Month, I invite all Ontarians to take this important opportunity and learn more about the rich diversity of Indigenous peoples and how their contributions and achievements have shaped our province and country for the better. While commemorative events will be virtual this year, there are many online resources available to help every Ontarian mark this important month in a meaningful way.”
